Steps To Calculate The Quantity Of A And B In Epoxy Resins

  • The use ratio refers to the amount of components A and B required to harden the compound and catalyze the product well.
  • While mixing the two components, you will have to do tests to understand how the Epoxy Resin works. 
  • Each bottle of resin and hardener will have a mathematical proportion where the amount of hardener will change depending on the type of product, especially if you measure by weight.

For Example

Resin (A) = 100 and Hardener (B) = 66

By Coefficient of Calculation, 66/100 = 0.66

When you multiply any amount of A using this coefficient, you will be able to determine the grams of B or hardener to add to your compound.

If you change the use ratio, the coefficient will also have to change. Going by this coefficient, if you have 32 grams of Epoxy Resin, then 32×0.66 = 21.12 grams of B or hardener. 

Measuring And Mixing Epoxy Resin And Hardeners 

There are two ways to measure resin, either by weight or volume. Given below are the steps for both options.

To Measure By Weight

  • When measuring by weight, see the label of the hardener bottle to determine the correct weight needed for an accurate mixture. 
  • Choose the unit of measurement on your scale. Your unit should help you determine 0.1 ounces or grams. If the quantity of resin is very small for the scale to give you an accurate measurement, then the mixture will not be consistent. Usually, a minimum of the 1.47-ounce mixture is recommended.
  • Reset the scale to zero and keep the cup on the scale. 
  • Pour the Epoxy Resin first and make a note of the amount.
  • Calculate the quantity of hardener required. 
  • Pour in the hardener directly from the bottle. If the scale resets before you pour the hardener, you will have to measure and then pour it separately.  

Measuring By Volume

  • When you measure by volume, the correct mix ratio is 2:1, that is, two parts resin to one part hardener. 
  • Determine how much of the mixed material you will need. 
  • Pour the Epoxy Resin into the graduated measuring cup. Ensure the bottom of the curved liquid surface meets the line that you are pouring into. Warmer Epoxy will lay flat, so wait a moment for it to settle before you calculate the amount of hardener required.
  • Next, pour the required amount of hardener to complete the mixture. 

Tips And Tricks

  • Epoxy Resin is a very sticky substance and may cause skin irritation in some cases. Wear disposable gloves to protect your hands. Clean your hands immediately and thoroughly with soap and water if your skin comes in contact with it. 
  • Always use rigid mixing containers made of plastic. These are easy to clean because Epoxy Resin doesn’t stick to these surfaces. 
  • Work under ideal temperatures when handling Epoxy Resin. Usually, the ideal temperature for Epoxy Resin is 75-85F or 24-30C. If you work in colder environments, the resin will thicken and form microbubbles. 
  • Always mix a little more than what you think you will need for your project. This way, you will be able to cover your work in one shot instead of taking breaks to mix the resin and hardener. 
  • Ensure you put the correct caps on the right bottles. If the wrong caps are put on the wrong bottles, they will cure when the bottles are closed.
  • Don’t add more hardener to the mixture to cure resin faster. People often think they can shorten the curing time by adding more hardeners. But this is not true. This will, in fact, mess up the ratio, and your resin will not cure. The best way to ensure your resin cures well and quickly is to raise the room temperature, as the heat will act as a catalyst to the curing process.
