To become a bounty hunter in the state of Connecticut, there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled. These requirements include;

Requirements for Intending Bounty Hunters

Bounty hunting is a profession that is licensed and regulated. This means that not anyone can become a bounty hunter except they have met the requirements and have gone through the right training. The licensing for bounty hunters in the State of Connecticut is issued by the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.

Also known as Bail Enforcement Agents, BEA, bounty hunters are required by law to be citizens of the United States or naturalized US citizens. Added to this, such a person will be required to have a clean criminal record, one that is free from certain misdemeanor and felony convictions.

Starting a Career As A Bounty Hunter

There are many steps in the process of becoming a bounty hunter or bail enforcement agent. You will be required to obtain several forms and go through different steps to achieve this dream.

Below are some of the steps involved in the process;

Criminal justice training and firearms training

The state law requires that all bail enforcement agents undergo no less than 20 hours of approved criminal justice training as well as firearms training to be eligible to become a bounty hunter. The training must have also been completed not more than 5 years before the application date.

The firearms training is particularly mandatory for those who plan on carrying firearms while on the job. Those who wish to carry a firearm are also required by law to obtain a pistol permit.

Submit for biometrics

Any person planning on becoming a bounty hunter will also be required to submit their biometric information including fingerprint to the appropriate and authorized office for processing. Copies of fingerprints can be submitted at the local police department or at the licensing office.

It is important to note that the applicant bears the cost of the fingerprint scanning.

Submit a fully filled application package

Interested persons will be required to obtain the application form, fill and submit with a $200 application fee, a notarized Authorization of Personal Information form, a copy of the applicant’s drivers’ license, a copy of the applicant’s driving record for three years from the date of submission, high school diploma, college, or GED transcript, as well as two passport-style photographs.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will also request four (4) reference letters sent directly to it by the applicant’s references.

A former military staff will be required to also submit the DD-214 form that clarifies the reason for their discharge from the force while a former policeman will be required to attach a discharge letter to the application.

Attend the interview

The licensing body will carry out thorough background research on each applicant whose application is deemed correct and complete. Applicants who are considered are then requested to attend an interview.

The background check process can be lengthy and can take as much as 8-10 weeks for completion.

Bounty hunters are relied on by bail bond companies to help them catch defaulting clients or clients that have disappeared after taking bail bonds.

People who are interested in becoming bounty hunters but are unable to meet the eligibility criteria set by the licensing board can consider other career paths that are similar to bounty hunting. These career paths include

Receive license and uniform

Once the interview process has been passed and the body deems the applicant worthy of the license, the application will be approved. Following the approval, the Bail Enforcement Agent license is issued and the applicant can go ahead to obtain the uniform.

The uniform has “Bail Enforcement Agent” inscribed on the front and back part for easy identification. Once the license has been obtained, the Bounty hunter should note that they will be required to renew the license annually.
